Whether you’re looking for something quick to have for breakfast or an afternoon snack to fuel you through the day, you can’t go wrong with the classic sausage roll. Although often overlooked, sausage rolls remain a favourite among all ages. In fact, the unassuming Chicken Sausage Roll is one of our best-sellers! This classic treat consists of a hearty meat filling encompassed in perfectly golden buttery puff pastry. It leaves room for improvisation, so you can eat it however you’d like.

Heighten your classic pastry by preparing a simple marinara sauce to go with it. To guide you along, we’ve compiled 4 simple steps and tips to get you started!

You will need:

2 x Polar Chicken Sausage Roll
3 cans peeled whole tomatoes
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
2 large garlic cloves
1 teaspoon kosher salt
½ teaspoon dried basil
½ teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon lemon juice

Instructions:

– Place a large skillet on the stove over medium heat. Once the skillet is hot, add the oil and swirl it around to coat the base of the skillet evenly. Then, add the chopped garlic cloves and sauté until just golden brown. Be sure not to over brown them!

– Add in the peeled tomatoes, salt, oregano, basil to the skillet. Use a wooden spoon or ladle to break the tomatoes down into a purée. Bring the sauce to a boil over medium heat and stir until it has thickened to a dipping consistency. After which, remove the sauce from the heat and stir in the lemon juice. There’s no right way to seasoned the sauce, so taste and adjust it with salt and lemon as needed!

– Reheat your sausage rolls in the oven until they’re warm on the inside and out.

– Plate your sausage rolls and marinara sauce. You can either pour the sauce over your sausage rolls or have it as a dip. Enjoy!

Extra tips:

Leave some texture. If you’re used to eating canned sauce, you may think that marinara is supposed to have an extremely smooth consistency. Contrary to that, leaving in a bit of texture adds some intrigue into the sauce to make it a little more interesting.

Don’t add too many ingredients. You may want to jazz up your marinara recipe by adding extra ingredients such as celery, carrots, roasted peppers, or mushrooms. However, marinara is a classic that is known for its simplicity in flavour. Adding too many extra ingredients can impart strong flavour or smell that deviates from the classic taste.

Take your time to cook it. Pasta sauce can be cooked relatively quickly, but you still won’t want to rush it. Some ingredients will benefit significantly from a longer cooking time. For instance, slow cooking the tomatoes in a marinara sauce helps to bring out its rich flavour and reduce it to a texture that concentrates the flavour. Cooking your marinara in less than thirty minutes may result in your sauce being bland and watery in texture.

Homemade marinara sauce doesn’t need to be difficult! Follow the steps above for a simple marinara sauce that complements your sausage rolls and can be kept in your fridge for when you make other dishes such as pasta!
